Nana,

It could be anything from a loose or bad connection in the wiring harness somewhere, or something more serious as a control unit that is malfunctioning. Generally there are only 4 parts: 2 self contained airbags, a control module, and the wiring harness.

Did anything happen or did you have any work done on the car that coincided with the light coming on? Does your horn and cruise control work? If not, then it is likely your clockspring in the steering wheel (allows electrical signals to pass through the rotating wheel). Because the clockspring winds and unwinds every time you turn the wheel, it can be susceptible to breaking.

It is almost impossible for the airbag to go off on its own. But, depending on the problem, the system may or may not be active when the light is on, so I'd suggest taking it to the dealer and have them look at it so you're protected. They can read the proprietary codes with the scan tools and should be able to tell you what is wrong. Other places like Autozone may be able to read the codes, but I'm not sure if they are able to read SRS (supplemental restraint system) codes.

Hope this helps...glen
