this problem is called encompresis.I am a nurse, and my daughter had this problem, too so I know how frustrating this can be. It starts with one hard to pass stool, then they're afraid to go again because it might hurt. they get constipated, and sure enough it will hurt, so they hold it again. and the circle continues. the dr. put her on Miralax. Its a perscription stool softener. we use it twice a day, and she has to sit on the potty for 15 minutes after breakfast and dinner. within two days she was going every other day, with no leaking. this is a long term problem that can take up to a year to break the cycle with continueing the stool softener. we've been doing it about four months now, and she's doing better!! try not to discipline him for his accidents....he really can't help it.
