Girls, I ran this question in my newsletter and got several positive responses.
Here are a couple of the responses I received and published:
The best recommendation I have for Jessica in her quest to be more outgoing and become an actress is to join Girl Scouts (GS). In the friendly and encouraging atmosphere of a GS troop, each girl can shine! There are lots of opportunities for growth in so
many areas, including the arts. Jessica can start out slowly
doing songs and skits with the troop, then branch out to
performing in front of other troops at camp outs and other
events. There are even GS Interest Projects in areas that would aid an acting career, such as The Lure of Language (accents), Understanding Yourself and Others (body language), Invitation to the Dance (poise and grace), On a High Note (almost every actress has been involved in music somehow), and, of course, The Performing Arts and The Play's the Thing. My own daughter's have been in GS for six years and have blossomed in ways that never would have been possible without it. Even I, as leader of a troop and area event coordinator, have discovered strengths and abilities I never knew I had. Jessica's local Girl Scout Council should be listed in the phone book; one phone call will
direct her to the closest troop. - Joy

There are lots of things you can do to help yourself become more outgoing and many of them are free. In many cases you could also help other people while you are helping yourself. You could join community theater and that would help you with your acting also.
You can volunteer to help with a hospital or nursing home
program to interact with the patients. You could give service through a homeless shelter or the Ronald McDonald House. You could join a club at church or in the community, or a home school support group. Things like boy Scouts, girl scouts, the Y,& sports offered through the recreation center or the parks department,or any one of a number of other offerings. If there is nothing in your area you could start whatever type of program would interest you. Chances are if you would like it there would be other people who would also like it. Some colleges are even looking at students volunteer histories when considering admissions. - Julie
