Subject: Xander and Buffy Ships Analyzed

ok, while at my shirt at burger king, i had some down time. so, i started to think about the ships that surround buffy and xander. both seperately and together. ill go through all the ships they went through thus far. im prepared for back lash. be warned though, i am a werewolf, and i am always recruiting.

first, Buffy Ships

there has been three main ships for her that have been gone through. (not including Xander)

Buffy/Angel--This ship has been doomed from the get go. true, what they had was love. buffy loved angel and he loved her. this was true love, because they had souls. they enjoyed each other's company, but face it. it had no future. angel would live forever and buffy would die young because of her being the slayer.

Buffy/Riley--This ship was off the rebound. buffy just broke up with angel and she was vulnerable. riley was also not human. he was super human, but did come back to human. riley was in love with buffy, but she never with him. it wasn't until he left that she started to feel the pain. anyways, riley is better off with samantha. (his wife)

Buffy/Spike--(This one will be most targeted for backlash, i bet) spike has said time and time again that he has loved buffy. however, unlike angel (who had a soul) spike doesn't until now. (whether its a good or bad soul, we dont know yet) spike has always been bad since season 2 into season 6. plus, he has the chip.

buffy never was in love with spike. before and/or after her death. also, like with angel, this relationship is doomed from the getgo. further more, spike is in love with the slayer, not buffy. he loves that someone can go along with power and strength. he hasnt been the same since drusilla left, and later died.

Now, Xander's turn.

Xander/Cordelia--Granted, the dynamic was great. they had both great comebacks. but, their relationship only happened after they kissed by accident. and, what kind of love is it when the woman breaks up with the man on valentine's day.

plus, if the relationship was meant to stay, then cordy would have worked it out with xander instead of pinning for wesly.

xander/willow--oh, the great problem between the two. true, they are best friends--but that's all. one, willow is gay now. and DF said she would stay that way. the two kissed in season 3 when they with oz and cordy. it was also the clothes fluke.

plus, they say they love each other too much. if it was meant for more than a relationship, it would have been said less. that and, they would stay further away from the 'best friends' line.

willow was only truly happy with tara. i will miss tara.

xander/anya--this ship is like the buffy/angel and buffy/spike. it was doomed from the getgo. anya was an ex-demon, now she is a demon again. and plus, their relationship was too much on sex. anya just appeared from season 3 till season 4 out of nowhere. where did she go?

true, i love anya or anyanka, but i just dont see it returning. at the end of seeing red, xander told buffy that if anything happened to her or willow, he wouldnt know what he would do. if anya was meant for him, he would have included her in that statement.

now, its Buffy and Xander

xander has been in love with buffy in season 1. he has loved her through cordelia, willow, and anya. true, now he is just a friend to her, but that will change in season 7. xander fell in love with buffy. just buffy, and then the slayer. he has been there for her since the beginning and not once left.

angel left for LA, Riley went demon hunting, Spike left for Africa, and giles left for england. not to mention her father too.

buffy always craved normality. xander can provide that. she is attracked to him. how do we know? there have been numerous BX moments over the years. there are too many to list. we all know them anyways.

buffy may have said that she only thought of him as a friend, but feelings change. if xander went from love for her to friendship, then buffy can go the opposite.

the 'friend' line was also used because of willow. she was in love with him.

a side note:

joss is one for surprises. when season four began, people thought that this would be the perfect time for xander, but he went a seperate route. enter anya and riley. two whole new characters. well, riley was new.

now, flashforward to the end of season 6. willow and xander are comforting eachother. this makes it look like Xillow( what ever you call WX) will happen.

spike gets a soul, (this make Spuffy look like it will return)

again, with this, season 7 looks like BS and WX. but that is expected. he did that so, when BX happens, it will be a surprise.

Well I've ranted one way on this and I've ranted the other way. BX deserves its day in the sun. I would love nothing better than to have the show finish with BX being the spotlight relationship. And honestly I could really see this as happening. Nick Brendon was hired as the male lead in the show. Maybe there was a method to the madness.

I've got theories from here to Zanzibar on why they might go bx and differnt kinds of foreshadowing or whatever.

Will it happen? I agree with some of the sources I've heard. Its 50 50. They can go either way. But for me they have to do one thing to retain me as a veiwer and its not to put B with X. I want it really bad. But they need to simply not ignore Xander as a character this season and to not turn him into the most hated character on the show. Personally I think the rapist stalker should take that role but the world is fucked up like that.

Sorry need to stop myself or I'll go Spike hata rant on you.

BX to me, means Xander in a good storyline role. Not pushed to the side with just whatever they can think of. It allows him to be interesting cause it means they actually do something with him. If I see another episode next season like they did in Gone and Smashed where the only thing Xander does is call in some info to Buffy. Well then I'm pretty much gone. There is a lot of potention for powerful storylines that dont involve turning the heroine into an evil sex whore who can't stand her friends and they don't dragging her through the dumps of dispair. They can do drama without it being always depressing. Drama dne sad.

I agree with you ... not the wanting to see B/X part .....the Xander storyline part. They sorely overlooked a key character this past season for whatever reason (Joss wanted it that way, Marti wanted it that way, writers ran out of normal storylines, NB needed some time away from the set, whatever). We may never know the real reason. The three key characters (Willow, Xander and Buffy) should be in every ep in some fashion. The story should involve one of them in every scene. I think in the past, they were doing this. In Angel, or Friends, or any other TV show where there are more than one main character, each character has screen time. Granted, sometimes the show will focus on one or two of them each week, but it then rotates to the others the next week. S6 really did not do this. The show really struggled to give the audience an equitable view of all their lives.

S6 focused on Willow (addiction storyline, coming into her own with the magic, and her relationship with Tara, then her breakup and her recovery from the addiction ... oh, and her friendship with Amy, relationship with Dawn, and showed some friendship moments with Buffy); Buffy (well, of course, the show is about Buffy); Spike (a very important character in my mind, but hasn't been there since the beginning was a central character in most every ep since OMWF - relationship with Buffy, personal struggles with his demons). S6 had a smattering of Giles, Dawn (but enough whining already!). The rest of it was leftovers for Xander (relationship with Anya, some interaction with Willow/Buffy/Dawn/Spike). It was pretty apparent that the focus was not on the third key player.

What would I like to see in S8 .... more balance, and some answers to questions. I'd like to see a decision made about the Spike character (is he bad, is he good - and STICK with it!!!). I'd like to see Dawn (and Xander) whine less, become stronger, more confident. I'd like to see Buffy smile, bitch less, appreciate her friends more, tell people what she means and thinks and not keep it all inside. I'd like to see a lot more of Giles. He brought some balance to the show, he was like the center of a wheel, all spokes led to him (ok, now THAT was lame! hahaha). I'd like to see less focus on the relationships, more on the story and the action. There! That's my wish list.
