The kicker is the stone. Don't want to spend too much. But I'd need some really big stones! For authenticity. So far all I have done is shelve my plans to plant apple trees on the plot. Apples aren't making any money, so I'm turning it into a grave! The parcel is actually right next to the driveway that goes up to my the family farmhouse. I have to go through all sorts of paperwork to get the land declared a graveyard by the county. But a distant cousin's husband is on the County Cemetery Commission!

I'm thinking I'll really get started this Fall by planting some of the larger trees I want to shade the tumulous/crypt. I'm half-German so there has to be some great big white oak trees on the property to carry on under. Maybe a big beech too for ultimate shade. Take years to get that way though.

Hey, is wierding anyone out? I think its rather exciting to be able to create something like this. Think about it some high school kids might find it so neat they'll end up loosing their virginities on my grave! That's influence for centuries to come!

I'm a big believer in doing things your own way. Most people are too afraid or intimidated to put some thought in to how they want things done for themselves after their death, so I applaud you. And I think it's way cool to not only design your own crypt, but build it too.

Sound like a project that could be never-ending if you wanted it to be. You could just keep adding cool stuff onto it indefinitely.

Have you ever heard of Ferdinand Cheval? (Not too sure of the spelling of his last name) He's a Frenchman famous for building this huge sculpture called the Palais Ideale. He dreamed of this fantastic elaborate castle and spent half his life recreating it. He made this huge, beautiful castle full of elaborate decorations and intricate designs. At the center of it he made a crypt for himself and his wife. But the French government gave him a hard time about it, wouldn't let him use it as a grave site or something like that, so at the age of 60-65 (I think), he started making another one inside an official graveyard. A scaled-down version that was nonetheless another exact replica of what he saw in his dream. And he finished it too, unbelievable enough. So he left these two beautiful, elaborate structures behind, and he was finally able to be buried in the castle of his dreams.

Don't remember the name - I would have if his surname had been close to one of my French ones :) But I do believe I remember the situation.

I don't think of mine as taking on 'heroic' proportions. People around here are going to think I'm nuts anyway, well some already do!

Since I started thinking of this this morning, it was really bugging me to find a picture of it. I finally found one.

It's a French site, but they have an option to click on English language. He was a postman before he took on that huge project. Somehow, that makes it even cooler to me, that he wasn't a professional artist or anything. Just built what he saw in his dreams.

I'm pretty sure I have the postcard of it that is on the English page! Don't ask, wierd hobby of collecting.

Thank God I don't have to think about masonery too much for mine. A tumulous is supposed to look rather jumbled. I do want to do a sort of a Stonehenge thing for the front however, two standing stones with a lintel stone crossing above them. With a tumulous it should be low however, so that one who enters must crouch, to show reverence to the dead. And perhaps one standing stone shorter than the other.

Now that's what has had me wondering about the design. An entrance to a tumulous is smaller than modern coffins! So I first figured that I would build a coffin in the crypt as it exists now, because you actually cannot get a coffin through the hatch in the floor of the block-house as it exists now. So build a coffin in the crypt. Bring my body to the tomb in another rented coffin and remove the body and take it into the crypt and lay it in my own coffin. Actually, I'd kinda like to be buried in a flexed position, fully bound in linen cloths anyway (No suit! If you're alive don't let them bury me in a suit!), yeah wierd.

But then I figured out that it would be easy enough to turn the tumulous entry up to 90 degrees from the present entry to the block-house. Actually, I'm not sure if tumulous have entrances that all generally point in one direction or not (time for a detailed Internet search!), perhaps coordinated with the sunrise at the equinox or solstice. It would make entering more interesting to have to turn after entering the tumulous, and scarier! Anyway turning the entrance allow the opportunity to create a false entrance through which my body could be more easily brought into the crypt. Then after my interment a contractor could seal up that entrance. Something like rolling the stone in front of the cave!
