I noticed a couple of those in that race - I'm fairly new to pack riding myself but I think the best/safest approach is to loudly call out "Slowing", as you do when braking hard, and try to keep the bike in a straight line while you're stopping rather than veering to the side & into someone's path (I know v. hard to do with a tyre gone!)
