Subject: A novel idea

Just a thought, but since we have all these people turning up for the early season open races - why don't we encourage them to keep coming back. Some ideas: ask any of them if they are new to racing and unsure what to do then to see experienced cyclist X or Y before the race and they will answer any questions. Have the club captain personally welcome new folk. Explain how a rotation should work safely. Give people some basic safe racing tips. No barking at people at the start of a race telling them that if they don't take a turn in the lead then they may as well have stayed in bed. Some of the limit crew in particular aren't strong enough to take the lead especially after the race has been underway for a while. Sure for the hard nuts in the latter groups, the code might be if you can't rotate then drop off, but in the limit no one takes it so seriously and if some just hang on by the skin of their teeth down the back then that is fine. Be real friendly to newcomers. The organisation has been good so far this year but we just need to be a bit more user friendly across all organisers especially towards new comers.

Tell them not to get disillusioned if they get dropped early on - it is an experience that every cyclist has from time to time and especially when beginning cycle racing.

Road racing is one of the most exciting sports going - lets convey that message to the newcomers and let's inject more fun into the whole affair. PS the chute finish is a great idea so we can have an accurate finishing order, a few more times would help.
