I used to live near one of the best classical guitar stores in the country, Guitar Solo in San Francisco. I would come in every day and play different guitars by famous makers from all over the world. Innovations are occurring all the time, and exceptional guitars are being made by all the top flight luthiers, but I preferred the guitars made by John Gilbert of Woodside, CA (now retired), and his son, Bill Gilbert. They were consistently exceptional. Their guitars (cedar top, Indian rosewood back and sides) had great clarity, resonance, loudness, range, depth, expressive power, true intonation in all positions, the works. The first string (the singing string) had a lot of punch. I played a Gilbert in a multiplayer concert with a lot of very fine guitars on display, and many people commented to me afterward that the Gilbert was far and away the best guitar heard that day.
