ALFONSINA and the SEA (by Ramirez)
Through the soft sand that the sea laps against
Your little footprint will not ever come back
A path full of pain and suffering
Reaches the deep water
A path only of silent grief
Reaches the surf.
Only God knows the agony you saw,
The old pains you was silent about
To be dandled by the singing of the marine conches,
The melody sung by the conch
in the dark sea floor.
You are going away, Alfonsina, with your loneliness
Which new poems will you find out?
An ancient voice of wind and salt
reassures your soul and is carrying you
And you go toward there,
Like in dreams, sleeping Alfonsina,
Wearing the sea
Five mermaids will lead you
Through passages of seaweeds, corals.
And phosphorescent seahorses
will dance around you
And the inhabitants of the water will play
At your side soon.
Dim the light a little more
Let me sleep, nursemaid, in peace
And if he looks for me, don’t tell him what happened
Tell him that Alfonsina will not come back
And if he looks for me, don’t tell him nothing about it Say I have gone away
You are going away, Alfonsina, with your loneliness
Which new poems will you find out?
An ancient voice of wind and salt
reassures your soul and is carrying you
And you go toward there,
Like in dreams, sleeping Alfonsina,
Wearing the sea
