I'm not sure if this turns out to be a response to the thread of 'playing without scores', we'll see. In my experience (as a talentless beginner) it pays to learn pieces by heart. E.g. it took me 2 months to learn 'Bolero' by Calatayud, but now i can concentrate on HOW I play it instead of WHAT I play. It takes effort, but it worked fine for me with the other pieces I tried (try) to master too.
