VERONICA HICKS VERBALLY COMMITS TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

Veronica Hicks, a 5’9 junior guard from Thornwood High School in South Holland, IL, has verbally committed to play basketball at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI.

As a junior, Roni averaged 12.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2 steals per game in leading her team to a 10-0 conference mark and 22-6 overall record. This past season she was All-Area, All-Conference, and a Player of the Week. As a freshman she received an MVP award on the Sophomore Team. She won Varsity letters the next two seasons. Her team were Sectional Champs as a Sophomore and Regional Champs last year in the State Tournament.

Roni’s travel team, Chicago Hoops Express, is considered one of the top teams nationally. Hicks is a rangy, long armed defensive presence who can play both guard spots and also does some time at the 3 because of her rebounding. She can finish with both hands and is an good shooter who can knock down the 3 when in rythm.

Veronica played on the 2006 Deep South Classic runner up this past April on a team that included 10 projected DI signees and 3 players rated to 30 in the nation.

She was a pre-season top 50 Chicago Area player last fall and made at least two All-Area teams this season which was a little difficult because Hicks played with 3 DI bound '06' kids.

Hicks will participate in adidas Top Ten All-American Camp this July. She is a quality kid with big time grades and huge basketball potential.

In addition to basketball, Veronica is ranked 6th in her class with a 4.5 GPA. She also is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society.

Veronica is interested in pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Michigan.

The new recruit states, “The University of Michigan is well-known and highly regarded for its academic program. A degree from there can be a tremendous start for my career outside of basketball. On the other hand, it also has a great athletic tradition in many sports. I have always wanted to play in the Big-Ten and Michigan has a great team that I will be able to contribute to and help build. Recently, after attending the Elite Camp, I realized what a tremendous coaching staff they have and they will help me grow as an athlete.”

Her high school coach, Kevin Connor says: “I am very pleased that Roni has made this very thought-out decision at this time. I know that it is one of the biggest decisions a student-athlete has to make. Roni is one of the most mature players I have dealt with, on and off the court. I am pleased to have been able to coach her at Thornwood High School. Michigan is getting one fantastic person and basketball player. All the best of luck to her. Congratulations Roni!!!
