I know quite a few students who have attended CSU. Their athletic program are not very good, as a matter of fact, they are quite bad. I believe that the reason very few local students are on the team is because of the CSU reputation for not being a very good educational establishment. A degree from CSU deos not pull any weight locally or nationally. This reputation may indeed be undeserved, biased, and/or unfair, but it is what it is. In my many years around the education system, I've noticed that most students look at CSU as a fall back if they don't get accepted or can't afford their other choices. UIC and Loyola are colleges that are associated with world class hospitals, hence they are research and medical science powerhouses locally and nationally. Depaul, which has a world class MBA program and impeccable business school credentials, speaks for itself. Obviously this does not account for the lack of local talent on the BB team, but considering that for 99% of college atheletes, sports is a means to an end and the degree is what they will use in life, many atheletes choose JUCO with the possibility of a transfer before choosing CSU. Like I said earlier in this message, it may not be fair, it may be biased, and it may not be deserved, but that's the reputation that CSU have and it is what it is!!!

"TEACH ME OH ENLIGHTEN ONE!!!!"

Seriously,
CSU is known locally for producing teachers who teach primarily in African American populated communities. Until there is major change within these communities or the admission standards at CSU get tougher, the reputation as it is will probably not change. It is the easiest post secondary university to gain accepted into in this area, I said university not college. In addition to that, many who graduate and are not hired as teachers in inner city schools have a hard time finding employment that is comprable to their constituients from Depaul, UIC, Loyola, etc. It is even being argued that today's youth are better served when a expert that majored in a particular field teaches vs a teacher with an education degree. Below is from an article in a recently published magazine entitled Public School Review

"Quality of teachers
Teachers in public schools are state certified, which means that they have gone through the training required by the state including student teaching and coursework. They are required to hold college degrees and to be licensed by the state.

Public schools cannot terminate the terms of their teachers abruptly. After completing a probationary period, teachers are granted tenure by law. They cannot be dismissed without first going through a twelve-month rehabilitation period. This too, can only be done after a public hearing in which charges of incompetence or misconduct must be proven.

On the other hand, private school teachers may not be required to have certification, and often have subject area expertise and a degree in the subject they teach. Private schools have their own personnel requirements. Private schools can terminate the terms of their teachers abruptly. Schools are free to deal with personnel matters.

I love CSU because it serves my community, I would simply love my community to demand more of itself, it's children, it's teachers, and evryone and everything that touches it!

Why do you think CSU womens basketball team players come from other states? I know of two 2007 kids that are giving CSU some thought,1 kid said she might pick CSU over the MAC and Mid-Con conference schools that are after her.She talks about the knew gym opening this fall and she liked the head coach.CSU to alot of the inter-city kids are like HBCU schools.
