Humane slaughter. I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but when we lived in the country in MO, everyone who had more than a couple of acres acres raised their own meat.
Beef, pork, poultry and if there was enough land, had a pond they kept stocked with fish, as well as a garden.

We traded services for organic meat and eggs and we ate very well and didn't get sick.

Now that we are in a big city (Atlanta metro area), there are still pockets of rural producers, and a couple of them provide meat to some of the local stores. I found out the days the local stuff was brought it and placed my orders accordingly.

We still eat really well. Not gourmet, but our food is clean and my husband says that I haven't managed to off him
with my cooking in 21 years, so...

heh.
