When we lived in Germany, our landlord was a former Wehrmacht colonel. He had been suspected by the US military of being a war criminal simply because he wore the uniform. At that time, in the aftermath of the war,
it wasn't generally known among the rank and file of the US Army that there was a strict heirarchy regarding the
German military, and that it was the SS who ran the concentration camps, whereas the Luftwaffe and the Wehrmacht ran the POW camps.
