You know Stan, sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don't. Gates is scary for a lot of reasons, and not the least of which he knows the hot spots and can be influential as to where the next 'hot spot' will be.

Rummy was a pilot and acted like a dumb Navy fighter officer jock. But even so, the intractability and his resignation at this point in time doesn't make sense unless Bush had to bargain with his replacement. Since SecDef is an appointment, we will see when Bush leaves, if he stays.

One of the biggest problems you have in dealing with the military is that if the boots on the ground like you, no prob. Rumsfeld at least saw to it that those who broke the rulez were held accountable. But he also espoused a largely unpopular doctrine on how to fight the war which
did not make sense to those who had to make it happen.

He was out of touch.

I know, more than you wanted to know...sorry.
