And to retrace mine, my experience has been different. We had to pay excess taxes because they wouldn't tell us that they had two different names for the same account: My social was under my maiden name but we filed jointly under his name. I did not have a CPA who could help me with that and had to find out on my own. Back the eighties
it was the IRS who collected no matter what and ruined a LOT of families and peoples' lives because of taxpayer ignorance.

Had we filed singly, we would not have paid the marriage penalty tax. I fought the audit and won, but it took two years.
