I should have specified that as a citizen, I can donate on my own to a tax exempt organization. That's what I meant by private. But you also raised something that I have often wondered about; donating directly to those in need.

How do you (this is for everyone) determine when to give?
Not how much or what; that isn't the question, but what personal guidelines do you follow that have stood you in good stead?

We have had 'giveaways' when we were moving; we have donated to local groups that we knew were truly helpful in
helping others...but we did so after praying about it and were directed to talk to the bishop to see what groups were in need.

No, we didn't write those off...
