what the theme of the book is. The theme of LotF is "All men are animals. Left to themselves they inevitably revert to their beastly selves." That is a very pessimistic (and inaccurate) theme.

The theme of Orwell's books however is "Unlimited gov power is evil" That is a true statement(at least IMVHO). I would hope that it is a lesson we can learn through fiction rather than personal experience. Now if, in his books, nothing bad happened as a result of unlimited gov, then it'd be kinda hard to get that message. Yeah, bad things happened, but if nothing bad happened, how would anyone ever get the idea that it's wrong to let gov have unlimited power?

IOW, not all books that have depressing things happen in them are equally bad.
