Constitution Party Congressional Candidate Jim Gilchrist Qualifies for Runoff

Strong Showing in Orange County's District 48 Unexpected

LANCASTER, PA: On Tuesday, October 4, 2005, Jim Gilchrist came in a close third in California’s District 48 special election to replace outgoing Republican Rep.Chris Cox, placing well ahead of all Democratic candidates.

Gilchrist's almost 15% of the vote stopped the leading candidate from receiving enough votes to avoid a runoff. Running on the ticket of the American Independent Party, the California affiliate of the Constitution Party, Gilchrist now advances to the runoff election on December 6. His main opponent will be Republican John Campbell, who has already hugely outspent him and who has the support of the Republican Party establishment.

Mr. Gilchrist, 56, a veteran of the U.S. Marine corps, received the Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam, and is a retired CPA. In October 2004, he founded the Minuteman Project to fight illegal immigration by encouraging civilian volunteers to watch our border with Mexico and report illegals crossing the border to the authorities.

Mr. Gilchrist’s campaign comes at a time when the United States, and southern California in particular, is being deluged with hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants each year. Jim’s candidacy has shined the light of scrutiny on both major parties’ refusal to stem the tide of illegal immigration. His message is clearly being well-received by the voters of Orange County.

"The success of the Gilchrist campaign in Tuesday's election is yet another sign that the political winds in America are finally starting to change" stated Constitution Party National Chairman Jim Clymer. He pointed out that the American electorate is fed up with the national leadership of both so-called "major parties, "who continue to break promises, ignore the concerns of their constituents, dismiss constitutional restraints on their lawmaking authority, and cynically cater to corrupt corporate and other special interests.

Clymer emphasized that "the voting public has had it with congressmen who steadfastly refuse to concern themselves with the Category 5 hurricane of illegal immigrants flooding our country. As our elected leaders look the other way, illegal immigrants are clogging our welfare rolls and criminal courts, bankrupting our school systems, taking jobs from American citizens, and making a mockery of the rule of law."

Jim Gilchrist’s candidacy has been endorsed by a number of principled conservatives, including former Orange County Congressman Robert Dornan, Republican Congressman Tom Tancredo of Colorado (known for his principled fight to regain control of our borders), and former presidential candidate Alan Keyes. Because District 48 is traditionally one of the most conservative in the country, Mr. Gilchrist has a very realistic chance of winning December’s runoff election and of taking his principled, constitutional agenda to Washington, D.C.
