getting $$ from the feds. Our candidates boast in their campaigns that they bring home $1.84 for every $1 that North Dakotans pay in taxes. Between the military bases, Social Security/Medicare (our state population is much older than average), student loans/grants (more State universities per capita than any other state and we have reciprocity with 18 states!) and farm handouts we really know how to rake it in. It's one reason this otherwise very conservative state keeps sending Democrats to Washington DC year after year--no one wants to send an amateur to DC to bring the money home. Even the GOP candidates campaign with "Elect us--we'll have the President's ear so we'll bring even more money home!"

On the other hand, when it comes to weather, we are a pretty tough bunch here. There's been no storm that's dumped 44" in one storm, not even in '96-97, the worst winter on record. Now DRIFTS, that's another matter. I have no doubt there were snow drifts that got to be 44". We had a 22ft drift in our windbreak by April '97. We still had snow melting on Memorial Day.
