Modern day Palestinians comprise lots of different tribes, some Abrahamic, some not. Their name comes from the Roman name for that part of the world--Palestine--not just the name of the tribe Philistine.

If you look in the Bible Dictionary you see that Hittites and Philistines descend from pre-Abrahamic tribes. The Bible dictionary says that Amalekites were an Arab tribe, which according to the Bible dictionary is another pre-Abrahamic designation. Here is a good explanation of the where the Amalekites come from.

Most non-Abrahamic tribes were either subdued or wiped out by the time of Solomon. Most of the current semetic tribes in modern day Palestine are descendents of Abraham.

I don't think God gives any people a perpetual enemy to keep them humble. I believe God uses love and patience, longsuffering and gentle persuasion to bring us to Him. I believe that there are those who oppose God's work and we must choose whose side we are on and suffer (or enjoy :D) the consequences of our choices.

Today's animosity does NOT stem from ancient rivalrys, from Jacob and Esau, Isaac and Ishmael. That's an invention of modern Christians who want to justify the US position in the Mideast. For centuries Israelites (mostly Jews) lived peacefully amongst their semetic brothern--under the Romans, the Ottoman Empire and then under British rule. Current problems stem from the Zionist movement--when Zionists returning to Palestine demanded the displacement of Palestinians. The Zionist movement was purely political and has nothing to do with Biblical or Mosaic principles. Most of the Jewish leaders of early Zionism were atheists.

And while the Palestinians/Arabs get blamed for most of the violence, they had good teachers. Early Zionists used terrorism to get political concessions. Moshe Dyan, Menachem Begin, Ariel Sharon, and many other honored Israeli leaders are directly responsible for the slaughter of countless innocents, including entire villages of Palestinian men, women and children. Pro-Zionist terrorists created such havoc that Britain finally acceded to their demands (Palestinians have learned first hand how effective terrorism can be.)

A good encyclopedia--such as Britannica--will give you a nice overview of the emergence of the state of Israel and the tensions that have ensued.

*An interesting side note--the only Mid-east government to ever attack the US is Israel--they did it twice. The Lavon Affair and USS Liberty. The only Mid-east government to be found spying on the US is Israel--twice. Jonathan Pollard, about 20 yrs ago and just recently another spy working as an analyst in the Pentagon was arrested. So much for Isreal being an ally.
