Subject: Here is a quote that will

make your hair stand on end. From Garet Garrett's book, Defend America First he is quoting FDR's Atty General, Robert H. Jackson, on the eve of WWII, preparing the American people for their glorious mission in this war:

In 1933 we were not a nation--that is, judicially speaking, we were forty-eight nations, and our Federal power had been interpreted away until the Constitution was but a little stronger than the old Articles of Confederation...Our representative democracy has been made a nation in the last four years. If it is able to organized its economy to support its defense today it is in no small measure due to the greater liberty of action won in little-publicised court decisions too technical perhaps for complete public understanding. That National Government has won its long fight to free itself of unwarranted limitations...We have restored the vitality of a free government on which a narrow legalim was inflicting a kind of rogor mortis...We have won for peacetime programs powers that in 1917 were felt could be used only in war emergncy...The lines of future liberal policy are clear. We must move at an accelerated pace."

So many fascinating points here:

that decisions were made that you stupid commoners will never understand.

It only took four years for this sea change.

"vitality of government" "greater liberty of action" oooooh--just gives me the willies thinking about it.

"National Government has won its long fight to free itself of unwarranted limitations" Sing all hail to our god, the state, free at last from the limits of small-minded man.

As Garrett points out:
"What we have here is not the evisceration of a word like "democracy" but a sudden inversion of meaning, all the more startling because it was so easy to do. The meaning of free government is turned upside down and still makes perfect sense...
...When the President spoke of of people having fought and worked to win the privelege of free government, no one could have supposed he did not mean it in the traditional sense, unchanged since the beginning of the written history of government--namely a government under which people are free; a government under which the rights, liberties and immunities of the individual are founded in law; a government that is itself limited by law--for unless the power of government be limited there is no freedom. And yet these two words "free government" taking them literally, can mean also the very opposite. They can mean that the government sahll be free, not people."

That is what makes this quote by the Atty General so scary--that our leaders have so successfully perverted the meaning of principles we long held inviolable.
