There is a greater calm when everyone agrees; is that truly "politics." Yes, political discussions ruffle feathers but it also gifts participants the opportunity to passionately engage with one another and become acquainted with disparate views--to recognize the sameness, goodness, of those who share opposing opinions. And as you mentioned, to learn from one another.

James Carville has been mentioned here more than once. And wasn't there a post where at least a few of us smiled to contemplate Carville and Coulter squaring off, imagining the two doing a point-counterpoint? Both are bold and unshy. And I'd have to stretch my thoughts futher than they reach to image either bears any ill will toward the other. I see them as entering into and leaving a debate only as a voice to ideas, a challenge.
