Welcome to this Genealogy Forum directly targeted as a FREE service to New Zealand Citizens. Clearly when deciding to trace our descendants we come across a wealth of foreign sites that do not include New Zealand. So Presto lets get it going here. Tell others of this site on URL http://geocities.com/heretaunga_2000/new_zealand_geneology.htm. When I can get the time I will recommend other sites that may help. When tracing relatives we will have much in common with Australia and The United Kingdom, in the mad Gold Rush days many came to New Zealand to make their fortunes, or to begin a new life with less repression and class distinctions. We expect to review histories from Maori, Murri, Polynesian, and Pakeha (English) sources, and cover hints of earlier Portuguese, Chinese, German, Italian, etc, There is even hints of the Australian Aborigine (who call themselves the Murri People, and called Maru iwi by the Polynesians) having made the shore of the West Coast of the North Island.
Don't hesitate to refer others to Website URLs that can enlighten us. Does anyone have old Parade Magazine stories, that gave many tib-bits of historical interest.
Get out those birth certificates and old photos. Personally I am looking for photos of the events and people in the Westcoast Buller region, to enhance a manuscript, The Buller District. by W.E.Spencer. Did you know Westport was being considered as becoming the Capital of New Zealand, that the Germans who went there to mine gold took back information about the gold there which Hitler considered would provide wealth to keep his war efforts going. When one sees the Japanese Squid fleets line up along the Horizon the sky glows with the massive electric bulbs used to lure the young squids to the surface. That the Japanese employ the convicts on these ships to ply the trade putting them to a valued use for their country.
