Subject: Stars Who Want To Be Rock Stars

By Philip Smith
THE NATIONAL ENQUIRER

Inside many a Hollywood film star there's a wanna-be rock star--and a surprising number of acrs and actesses have actually tried to cross the movie-rock divide.

While some of them are very embarrassing flops, a number of big names from from the silver screen have made it to the top of the music charts.

RUSSELL CROWE: The "Gladiator" star plays in a band called Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts. A critic called the band's music "as bland as tofu jerky," but tickets to Crowe's first U.S. concert sold for as much as $500.

GWYNETH PALTROW: The actress recorded a duet with Huey Lewis in 2000 called "Cruisin'" and a solo dingle last year called "Bette Davis Eyes." When asked if she expected either to top the music charts, she laughed and said: "Let's not get carried away."

But "Cruisin" reached No.1 and her solo effort got to No.3!

BRUCE WILLIS: His single "Respect Yourself," made No.5 in the charts in 1987 and he's had several other modest single successes since then. His band is called the Accelerators.

JOHN TRAVOLTA: He's hit it big as a recording artist with a series of LPs and a major single called "Let her In."

BILLY BOB THORNTON: The actor has been playing in bands since he was 9, and his recently released album "Private Radio" got good reviews. "That long history of playing in bar bands served him well," said a critic.

JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT: After appearing in FOX TV's " Party of Five" in 1995, she made her U.S. record deut with "Let's Go Bang." She made a second album a year later, and contributed two songs to the soundtrack for "House Arrest," in which she starred.

DAN AYKROYD: He has made a name for himwelf in the music biz, first partnering with the late John Belushi, and then Jim Belushi and John Goodman as half of the tremendously popular Blues Brothers.

STEVEN SEGAL: The actor released three LPs with music from his films, and he couldn't resist singing two songs on one album. But critics winced: "He flirts with the embarrassing," wrote one reviewer.@
