That was a serious post with legit questions. Not every police department takes care of their vehicles as well as they should. LAPD happens to be one of them.

They went for several years (1991-1993 I believe) without buying any new cars. For a large department, that's a long time to go without any new vehicles even to replace older cars that are destroyed in accidents or are just not mechanically economical to repair anymore.

In about 1994, I remember seeing a story on 60 Minutes, DatelineNBC or 20/20 about the LAPD and their fleet of unsafe vehicles in various states of disrepair. The police union was up in arms and complaining about the vehicles and the City's response was that there was no money to replace the fleet and they were maintained as well as possible. The tv then showed a typical LA beat car square-body Ford that was from the last vehicle purchase the LAPD made three years before. Torn seats, dashboard engine warning light on, dents and scratches, bald tires, bad suspension, fluid leaks and that was a NEW CAR because it was only 3 yrs old. The union was urging officers to refuse to drive the unsafe cars. The last part of the story was focussed on how theCity had just purchased some new 1994 Caprices and were slowly implementing them onto the streets and wondering how long they would last.

So, the point of the original post was valid. It's not blaming you for the ills that may have befallen the car before you owned it, it's simply bringing up a point.
