Subject: The Boinkers - Emerald Queen, June 15

My first impression of The Boinkers was that they looked a little kooky, but seemed to be a pretty cool group of guys. My second impression confirmed my first impression! I'd never seen them play before, but I've been 'meaning to' see them for a couple of years now, and finally did so on Saturday, June 15th at the Emerald Queen.

I've seen several bands at the EQ before, and have a pretty good idea of what a band can sound like in there. The Boinker's sound was pretty good, but I suspect it will be even better at their "home room" at the Firwood. They have a songlist that is music to the ears of a diehard rock fan like me (Journey to Guns 'n Roses to Van Halen), and they crank right into them with plenty of energy. Pretty much my only complaint was that a good number of the songs seemed to be slightly at the wrong speed.. they were either a little too fast or seemed to drag a bit. Bozo, the lead singer, has to stretch a bit to hit some of the higher notes on the scale, but he does it with such enthusiasm and energy that his vocal limitations are easily overlooked. And he did hit quite a few of the higher notes!

The band has a pretty good interaction with the audience.. this seems to be Bozo's forte, although Damage (one of the guitar/bass players) and Schroeder (keyboard player) put in their 2 cents from time to time. Probably the highlight of the night was at the beginning of the second set when Bozo came out with a hat covered in horns and a white tux tailcoat and 'directed' the band through Boston's "Foreplay" into "Long Time". I'd never heard anyone besides Boston themselves attempt to play Foreplay live, and these guys pulled it off with true rock pomp!

They're playing at the EQ again this weekend (June 21-22) and at the Firwood next weekend (June 28-29)... I for one will be at one of those shows, and I suggest you go catch them soon as well! Their website is www.theboinkers.com.. check 'em out!
