Sadly, because he did not come from the best environment, he learned from an early age that laying in his own waste is a way of life and perfectly acceptable. Dogs instinctively do not soil the area where they eat/sleep, but because of his early life & having no choice in the matter, his instincts have been overridden out of necessity. He can be housebroken, but it most likely will be a very time consuming & frustrating process.

How long per day is he crated? Is there any way you can have a neighbor or dog walker come to the home while you're out to take him out to do his duty? Optimally, at 4-6 months, the dog should be taken out to relieve itself every 2 hours. I understand this may not be possible in a working home.

How big is the crate? If he has more room than merely enough to simply stand up & turn around, get him a smaller crate. Of course, this may be of no use due to his early life.

When you are home, keep him tethered to you at all times. If he goes to piddle/poo, you will be right there to pick him up & take him out immediately. As I said, it can be done, but it most likely will take lots of patience, cleaning & above all...unconditional love.
