I don't recommend drugging your dog for any non-medical purpose. Homeopets makes some awesome all natural calming mixtures. Try purchasing some Anxiety (can find it online), place the drops on his tongue approx. 30 minutes prior to trimming and just do it. Or, you can add the drops to the water bowl the entire day before to keep him on an even keel, then give him the little extra boost the next day. There are several relatively quiet face trimmers on the market. Wahl makes one that is pretty inexpensive. I use an Oster Vortech cordless face trimmer & love it. It comes with two different blades and blade guard, as well as ac/dc adapter for about $50 - well worth the money. Wella Contura makes an AWESOME face trimmer that is incredibly quiet, but they are expensive and can only be purchased thru beauty supply (you'll need to have your hairdresser purchase it under his/her license). The other thing I recommend, and this may sound harsh...DO NOT cave into the dog's fuss over face trimming. If you let him win, he'll manipulate you ever time. Cresties are born master manipulators and can be quite overly dramatic...just don't let them fool ya. I have a 5.5 yr old puff that has been getting his face shaved every other week since 6 wks of age...he fights me everytime but he never wins. I have a 6 yr old female that screams like a little girl if you even show her the nail trimmers...again, she never wins. Mine actually don't mind the dremel for nail trims as much as they do conventional nail clippers - there is no chance of quicking the dog with a dremel. If the nails are real long, I will use nail clippers & then dremel close to the quick & remove the sharp edges.

Tell your vet that cresties run the gambit in size. I have a very small female, 9" tall and weighs 5 lbs and I've had foster dogs who are every bit of 15.5" tall and weighed 20+ lbs. The breed standard calls for 11-13" inches...but this in no way means they don't come larger or smaller. If your dog is proportionally correct (i.e., not overweight for his height), then there's absolutely nothing "huge" about him at all.

Hope that helps.
