Pasture for Foals
You walk upoun a pasture full of mothers munching quietly on grass while the their babies frolic and play with each other. You watch as one lone colt stands away from everyone else. He only watchs. His soft brown eyes fall upoun you. He stares for a second and then stops he quietly goes back to grazing but you notice he only lips the grass and really doesn't eat it. You look around and notice the mare and foal ratio is off balance by one. The poor foal looks up again and lies down. A young girl strides up, "That is Dawn of Time. His mother died just a few weeks ago. She came down with a sickness and was to old to fight it. We have tried everything to get him to play with others but he won't. But he will be a fine racer one day. Well if he lives long enough." She sighs shaking her head. She walks off.

The little bay mare lay down at the far end of the pasture, as far as she could get from the other mares and foals. Her time was very close. She whinnied as each contraction hit. Her labor was begining.

The mare neighs loudly to any other mares in the pasture. Bends neck to graze, tail swishing to flick flies away. Her colt bucks playfully, but soon tires of the game. Nibbles on some grass, but soon trots over to his dam to nurse. The mare looks up upon feeling his hard gums. Raises her head, and looks back at him, a little annoyed. She nips his muzzle, her expression clearly telling him he had to learn to eat grass. The colt shies away from her, and snorts sulkily. Again he attempts to eat the grass. He munches on a mouthful, but clearly prefers milk. She glances at her frame. She had gotten so fat! Shakes herself slightly, hoping no one had seen her in this state. She nickers to her colt. Glances up, boredly. Trots to the fence line, and whinnys to her colt to follow. Starts to trot along the fence, and urges her colt to follow. Follows her, not knowing what it was about. He enjoyed to run though. The mare changes her gait to a canter. She was determined to teach him that his business in life was running. Her long tail blows in the wind, her mane freely flowing. The colt follows in a canter, short crewcut mane sticks up as usual. Changes gait again, this time to a gallop. Sticks closely to the fence line. Uses her tail to balance herself as she rounds the turns. It seems as she is saying "Watch me, my son! Learn to use your tail! It is more than just a fly-swisher." The colt follows her, attempting to use his tail. Stretches low to the ground, hoofs kicking up dust as she gallops faster, as if for the home stretch. "Stretch low to the ground! Keep your head down and let your feet fly!" she seems to be saying. He gamely attempts to match pace with her. Stretches low to the ground, as she does, and finds himself going faster than he thought possible.

The young mare trots along the fence line, whinnying loudly and vainly. Looks for her person, Cassy. Looks around the pasture at the strange horses, and the strange little girl. She knew they weren't supposed to be here. She feels a nip. She turns to see her colt trotting away. She lets him go without bothering to correct him. But when he came back, she charged him playfully.

Her colt canters up behind his dam. He nips her flank, and trots away, very pleased with himself. When he tries to return, he finds himself being charged. He turns and starts to gallop away in fright. When he is a safe distance away he turns to look at her, finding her standing there, and he realized it was just a joke. He canters back to her rather sulkily.

She watches Starr and her beautiful colt. "Well Done Starr" she says as she rubs the mares head. "The fist foal from you and Battle Cry! What shall we call you?" she asks she watches the foal, his jet black coat shinning "I know, Midnight Salute! What 'bout that?"

The chestnut mare enters the pasture, a tag-along colt following behind. Flame starts grazing, while her colt frolics and plays in the grasses, buck-kicking and half-rearing.
