HUGH HANLON was born in Mullaghduff, County Donegal, Ireland on 17 Dec 1846 to William Hanlon and Mary (surname unknown).
In 1863 he immigrated to the US at the age of 16, sailing from Liverpool to New York aboard "The Cultivator". He went to stay with his married older sister Ann (Hanlon) Long in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Hugh Hanlon enlisted in the Union army in the Civil War and was mustered in on 29 Feb 1864. He was discharged by surgeon's certificate (as "Hugh Handlon") on 17 Jun 1865 following a gunshot wound to the leg and a sabor wound to the head.
Hugh married Catherine CUNNINGHAM in Pittsburgh on 24 Jun 1869 and they had 11 children:

4. ANDREW, born 3 Mar 1876
5. EDWARD, born 14 Apr 1878
6. SALLY, born 2 May 1880

9. HUGH jr., born 19 Oct 1887
10. JAMES S., born 7 May 1892
11. CATHERINE, born 15 Jul 1894
Hugh eventually retired to the volunteer soldier's home in Ohio (he was there in the 1920 census) and died in 1933 at his granddaughter's house in Pittsburgh.
