I had (knock on wood) the screen flicker malady afflict my Vivante SE (PII 266) a few months after I purchased my SE but it has been fine since then. You can check the message archives for other user's experiences but I don't believe there was a 'cure' short of sending the machine to ASE. I've pasted an excerpt from the Transmonde support response to my screen problems (from June 1998).

Sorry to hear about the problems with your computer. It sounds like either the backlight or the circuit that controls the backlight in the LCD screen is misbehaving, unfortunately there's not much you can do to fix this. The good news is that it shouldn't affect the rest of the computer, and if the backlight does fail completely, you can continue to work on it by connecting an external monitor until we can remedy it.

BTW - Was the Win2K install relatively trouble free?
