Subject: HMS Boscawen

In the 1871 Census, my great grandfather Henry George FULLER was a Boy Second Class on HMS Boscawen. In 1881 he was following his father's trade of Carman, his father having died. In 1891 and on documents throughout the 1890s he is variously A Ship's Steward and a Sailor. Later still he was a Cook and Manager of a Restaurant. As I'm unable to get to Kew are there any online records which might help? Was it common for men to leave the Royal Navy and return at that time? Is it possible that he started out in the RN and transferred to the Merchant Navy?
