Subject: Akbar, Clarence 1880s

My Grandfather was schooled on a Training Ship in the Mersey, probably in the 1880s. The PRO in Liverpool have the records of the Indefatigable for that time but cannot find his name on their lists.
It's possible that he was on one of the reformatory ships - the Akbar or the Clarence.
Can anyone tell me where I could get access to the records of those ships for that time period?
