1881 was the year in which the first Commander, Capt. Charles Ashwell Botelar Pocock, R.N., resigned, through ill health. Charles was also the father of the actress Lena Ashwell and also father of the founder of the Legion of Frontiersmen (1904) Roger Pocock (1865-1941).

Charles was Founder Captain in 1868/9. He was a religious man later becoming a Missionary in Canada.
