In reply to: David Allison 's message, "Prince Louis Burghead 1965 Gravesend Sea School 1966" on 17:23:00 09/06/00 Wed

I was born and brought up in Burghead, and well remember the Prince Louis. Infact, although I never sailed on her, I remember as a child being onboard helping Roddy Main (the cook and general crewman)with whatever he wanted us kids to help with. The sea-school boys were never very popular with us local lads, as they tended to catch the local talent before we would.
Also, you may be interested to know that I was a Catering Trainee in Gravesend (Denton) between Oct 3rd and Nov 25th 1966.As I recall, it was the year before the school was officially opened by Prince Phillip. I well remember instructors like Taffy Johns and Rashbrooke. Other names escape me now. I was there when they intraduced the monthly dances, I think for the first time. As I was a rock group member before joing the MN, I was encouraged to perform with the band that was playing on the first night in question.Oh what joy!!! Girls in the camp YES!!
Later in the late 70s/early 80s, I was serving as Catering Officer, and had to attend a management course in Southend.
One day during this weeks course,we had to attend Gravesend School. You will immaging my pride when I was asked to sit with Rashbrook and a few others during Lunch.
Sadly, during a visit to my sons in London about 4 years ago, my wife and I visited the School, only to find it closed down. A security guard let us in, and told me that it was going to be a police college.I think Cadets still do lifeboat training there, but that is about all.
Where has all the boys gone that went through that school?
I now work in the offshore industry.
it was quite a surprise when I came on this site, and was pleased that I am able to respond on both counts.

I will be happy to hear from anybody that attended Gravesend Training School about the same time as myself.
Any photographs would be appreciated.

Regards......... Ray Bannerman
