Subject: TS Indefatigable

I joined the Indie at Clawd Newydd, Nr Ruthin, N.Wales in 1942. Capt. Bambra was in charge and Mr Unwin was first officer. I think the Captains name was William but we used to call him Billy the B......d. I have to honestly say that I enjoyed my time with the Indefatigable. There was abuse, som sexual but among nearly 200 boys I suppose that was to be expected. As I remember there were 3 types of boys. Some came from Church of England homes, some I'm sure came from Borstal Institutions and some came from families who paid. I was one of the last. It was a tough place for a boy of 13 to be but if you could survive then you could put up with anything. When I joined the army it was like going to Butlins Holiday Camp after being on the Indie.
