Subject: Question for archive owners and writers

Okay let's say you have something submitted to an open archive you run and notice quite a few small spelling errors, I'm not talking differences in America/UK spelling(or slang and the such), but simple little spelling errors...is it okay to fix these errors before archiving? I really don't want to turn pieces down because of such a small thing but I also don't want to archive something so glaring. So for writers and archivers...should I simply post a message at the site letting writers know that spelling errors will be fixed before posting or just do it automatically? I can't imagine anyone would be bothered by such a thing, but you never know.

Really looking forward to hearing some opinions on this one.

Thanks!
lanie

As a writer, I wouldn't mind spelling corrections being made to my stories.

As an archivist: Well, a few years ago I ran an archive and I received a lot of problematic submissions. I did correct spelling in some of the stories, when I really couldn't stand how bad it was, but in retrospect I think I probably should also have posted a notice on my site saying I might do so if necessary. I think hardly anyone would mind if you just went ahead and fixed the mistakes without saying anything, but a notice is easy to add and keeps authors informed. And covers your butt just in case. BTW, no one ever said anything to me about my "help," so either they didn't notice, didn't care, or didn't want to make an issue of it.

As I'm formatting fics for the BBF archive, if I notice something minor, I'll definitely fix it (like a space between punctuation or something), but other than that, I'm pretty lucky - most of the stuff we're posting has been beta'd with a fine tooth comb.

I don't bother editing their mistakes -- I just have a note on the archives saying "all stories will be archived as posted -- if you can't bother to edit, then I can't be bothered either".

Just because it shouldn't be my responsibility to clean up after an author. I'm not your mom, I'm not your beta, and it's your job to make your story as readable as possible.

So, basically... fuck 'em.

Thanks for the input everybody, nice to get opinions from writers and archivers. I think I'm gonna' go with the whole post the way it's sent...time is of the essence after all. *g*

I fix them. People will sometimes e-mail me fics, and then I have to go through them anyway and add all the HTML tags, so I just fix everything I notice, because bad spelling annoys me. I'm not going to put in the effort of running a spellcheck or doing a really close read, but the glaringly obvious errors make me feel itchy.
