I don't understand this. If Mr.Tung resigned, some other people would compete for his job. What does Beijing gov't have anything to do with Mr.Tung's will? I don't think Beijing gov't told Mr.Tung to stay on his place (of course it didn't tell him to resign either).

As my previous post already mentioned, Beijing gov't keeps Mr.Tung to show its choice of Chief Executive was right. Switching the person would mean Beijing gov't made a wrong decision, and we all know Beijing gov't "wants face".

If Mr.Tung announced that he would not compete for the Chief Executive for the next turn, Beijing gov't had sufficient time to choose another one. I don't think more than half a year can be called a rush.
