"This way, fans will not only hear my so-called 'violent' point of view, but we can also examine the virtues of wonderful 'Christian' stories of disease, murder, adultery, suicide, and child sacrifice," Manson writes on his official website (marilynmanson.com). "Now that seems like 'entertainment' to me."
Manson was asked to cancel his performance on the Denver stop of the Ozzfest tour on June 21 by the church-affiliated Citizens For Peace And Respect, which claims the shock rocker embraces violence, hate, and drug use in his songs. The organization includes teens and families directly related to the Columbine High School shootings.
"I am truly amazed that after all this time, religious groups still need to attack entertainment and use these tragedies as a pitiful excuse for their own self-serving publicity," Manson says.
South Sheridan (Colorado) Baptist Church youth pastor Jason Janz recently told the Associated Press, "We as a society seem to have grown numb to evil. There's a throwing up of our hands in exasperation, a feeling that we can't do anything to fight it."
Manson's last scheduled performance in the area, just days after the April 20, 1999 massacre, was canceled due to reports that shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were fans of his music.
