Subject: Ex-policeman is jailed for cruelty to son

A RELIGIOUS former policeman who made his teenage stepson
destroy his Manchester United replica football shirt because he
thought the club’s Red Devil badge “ungodly”, was yesterday
jailed for two years for child cruelty and assault.

His wife was given a three-year community rehabilitation order
after also being convicted of cruelty and assault.

The boy, who is now 15, described how he was made to live
under a strict religious disciplinary regime during a trial at
Peterborough Crown Court, Cambridgeshire, in May.

His 35-year-old mother and 57-year-old stepfather disputed many
of the child’s allegations. Neither they nor the boy can be identified
for legal reasons.

The boy told a jury that he was made to live under a strict regime,
which included fasting to cleanse his body and regular punishment
for failing to carry out chores. The court was told the boy was
made to kill his pet chickens, stand outside for hours in freezing
weather barefoot, and eat food meant for pets.

He had been taught by his parents at home from the age of 10
under the Accelerated Christian Education System, and had
experienced little contact with the outside world. He ran away
from home in June last year and called the police, the court was
told. He is now in the care of a local authority.

Judge Peter de Mille, who had adjourned sentencing for reports,
told the father: “You subjected him to an inflexible, harsh and
unforgivable regime and singled him out . . . for mistreatment. He
was a vulnerable little boy who craved attention.”

The father admitted three charges of cruelty and one of assault. He
was found guilty of two further cruelty charges. The mother was
found guilty of one charge of assault and two of cruelty.
