Lots of things have been happening. We closed on a house (instead of buying silver). The first thing we did was buy tons of paint in all the rich colors we have ever dreamed of but could never have because rented places are all uniformly white. Apparently the exitement of being homeowners has led John to forgive me my transgression with Queer. Or maybe it was the truffles and the his-and-hers Flame Angels. Who knows?

Even though, in four years, John more than tripled the income of the neurologist he worked for, he got canned without ceremony on New Year's Eve. After about eight months of maneuvering, The doctor's fundie wife had succeeded in persuading the doctor that John's talents for making his employer bucketsful of cash were no longer necessary. Apparently the entire staff of the office is now made up of members of her church. Of course, he was eligible for unemployment and we were able to still get the house (I got a raise) but we have been hit. The Kid understands, and I think even enjoys having a parent figure more available. Serious job hunting will commence after we are fully settled in the house.

Nicky picked "gold" for his room and spent about ten minutes halfheartedly dragging a trim brush with Santa Fe Gold around his taped closet door before calling it quits and going outside to meet the kids next door. We were ecstatic with how the cheery color went on until Nick revealed that although the room is "great," he wants metallic gold walls. After witnessing Nicky actually breaking an actual 3/4" thick board at karate last Thu, we thought it best not to argue. John had the paint store mix some and will rag the walls.

We are joking about being intimidated but not about the board breaking thing. All the kids used a safety glove, which John said actually requires a harder and faster punch in order to break the board.

We thought briefly of taking him on the road and showing other kids how you can break bricks and boards using the Power of Godlessness, but decided that whatever we got after passing the hat would not be worth it. Plus it would cut into homework and Playstation time. I will give him the option of infiltrating those evangelical martial arts shows when he is older, though.

By the way, Nicky will be presenting us with his new rules of "discipline" as soon as he has me type them up. So far it involves total mastery of the TV, a doubling of allowance, and unlimited Chocolate Cream Oreos.

In the meantime, among my other duties, I have learned to perform in our organization's little puppet show that teaches kids seizure first aid and response. Until now I had thought those two semesters as a theater major when I was 18-19 were a complete waste of time.

I have to go do paperwork, client care, and design a window seat for our big living room window. John said he could build it.
