Deontology (the moral duty to justify one's beliefs or assertions) takes on a practical dimension here. Dennett makes some great points (as usual).

Of late, however, deontology and the internalist approach to epistemology has been unpopular--among both, oddly enough, extremely scientific and extremely religious
philosophers. The hard-core science camp likes externalism (the so-called causal account of knowledge) because it accepts the basic tenets of science as postulates; and the religious camp likes it because they can posit a whole different set of postulates from science and thereby ground their dogmas (e.g., one of Plantinga's suggested causal principles is that reading the Bible causes spirtual enlightenment).
