These matters of determining which American companies and arms merchants are responsible for equipping Iraq are too important to continue a discussion with someone too cowardly to post their name or an identifying "handle."

Never did understand what you militards are afraid of when your the likely group to own the vast majority of guns in the United States. Perhaps you know deep down inside that your opinions have no basis in fact and you must conceal yourself as much as possible; that's probably it. Pathetic!!!

Harlock - Column for 12/25
Merry Christmas!
I’m currently reading The 70 Greatest Conspiracies of All Time, which, as I tend to be fairly excitable about these things, I probably shouldn’t do. The book alternately amuses and upsets me. The authors have a wry sense of humor, and it comes out when they’re discussing some of the more insane alien/Illuminati/tinfoil hat theories.

But they also let a bit of righteous outrage show when discussing topics that demonstrate just how screwed up our government can be. Testing LSD on American citizens, getting in bed with the mafia when it’s convenient, and spying on and smearing anyone particularly interesting (say, Marilyn Monroe), or potentially dangerous to the status quo (say, Martin Luther King, Jr.).

Which brings me to someone whose name doesn’t come up much at all, and who seems to be one of the more shadowy Black Hats: James Baker.

Baker’s name comes up in a discussion of the Gulf War. First, when he passed word via U.S. ambassador April Glaspie to Saddam Hussein in August, 1990 that "the issue [Iraq’s border disagreement with Kuwait] was not associated with America." Giving Saddam a big ‘ol green light to go ahead with the invasion. Then his name comes up after the war: "Baker represented Enron, America’s biggest builder of natural gas pipelines. The Enron exec who dispatched Baker to Kuwait wondered allowed to [reporter Seymour] Hersh: ‘Is there any reason American companies shouldn’t profit from the war in Kuwait?’" (p. 49)

And they did, of course. On both ends of the war. First when we were equipping Iraq in the 80’s, then when we were bombing them during the war, and finally when we rebuilt Kuwait. But the real way to make money as a Bush ally is through the Carlyle Group. Baker joined that organization as a Counselor in 1993.

Now, remember: Duhbya barely knew that Ken Lay guy. And Enron? Uh, what’s that? Right. Not likely when Baker’s both Enron’s and the Bushs’ errand boy. Remember, he went winging down to Florida to help Georgie steal the 2000 election.

What does the Carlyle Group do? They describe themselves as a "global private equity firm." They really like defense-related industries, though. Oh, and the former president Bush is a senior advisor, and is paid quite handsomely for his services.

So what sort of interesting things has the Carlyle Group been up to lately? Hell, just look at their press releases. Or this article: "The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has sold a third of its defence research business, Qinetiq, to the US private equity group Carlyle." Oh, and note that John Major has a lofty position with Carlyle, too. Thanks, John, for that help with Iraq. One-third of Britain’s defense research. You’d think Carlyle was eager for a war or something.

Then Carlyle made a deal to buy another British company, Firth Rixson, a supplier of the "Aerospace, Nuclear, Automotive, Bearings, Oil and Railway industries[.]" How many of those will benefit from a war with Iraq? Why, all of them!

And now, right their on their press release page, "The Carlyle Group Acquires Majority Stake in CSX Lines for $300 Million." The very same CSX that was run by John Snow, who, completely coincidentally, is the new Treasury Secretary. The deal is set to close in the first quarter of 2003.

Oh, yeah, this war is going to make the Bush clan and their friends so damn much money. They certainly won’t let the truth, or a few thousand lives, get in the way of that.

And with that thought, Merry Christmas to all!
