My take on the matter is that Cheney won't be thoroughly investigated until the Dems are back in control of the Senate and that can't happen 'til 2005, when the 109th Congress is gaveled into session. As you suggested, the ticking time bomb within the de facto president's chest may very well have ceased operations by that time and any deep look into his arrangements with the corporate nazis will have to be conducted in a posthumous setting by whatever ad hoc committee assigned to the task at that time.

Once again, it's almost the perfect crime for the GOP. They gleefully laid blame upon the deceased former CIA Director William Casey for a majority of the Iran/Contra Affair activities, although the evidence indicates the dealings went much higher up in the Reagan/Bush misadministration. Expect another "so what, he's dead" round of remarks to surface in the coming years, if the opposition party remains in that role and goes through with a "let the chips fall where they may" type of complete investigation started by Sen. Joe Lieberman before they lost control of the U.S. Senate last year.
