I understand the concept of equal time for 'responsible opposing viewpoints' to be expressed has become quite narrow via court precedents and, quite frankly, since more and more media outlets are owned by a select few, the idea that the public owns the airwaves has become very blurred and not respected.

It makes so much sense to me that cablecasted opinions need to be delt with differently, since they are semi-private enterprises (there are issues of paying appropriate public right-of-way fees and exclusive franchise premiums), but the public remains the owner of the airwaves so radio and television entities using those avenues to communicate must take into account that very important aspect of serving in the public interest.
