this points out a common shortcoming of religion; it may provide enlightenment and guidance, but it also is a part of group identity formation.

Your religious group is, on a subconscious level, your "tribe". We have deep-seated instincts for "tribe loyalty", since working in groups has helped us survive as a species. A "threat" to the "Tribe" is a threat to oneself.

In some cases, one does not even have to actually threaten another "tribe", just simply be different and not be seized by the need apologize for being so. Then the homicidal chimp hive-mind kicks in.

I love how Christians pull this shit all the time, but a) claim that compared to Muslims, they are all bunnies and rainbows, and b) demand that all atheists and agnostics must prove their character.
