Effort and a willingness to accept the potential for discomfort tend to be the path to moments of great joy and satisfaction. To not struggle is much closer to being dead.

You've hit on a cornerstone of one of my arguments against Jehova's heaven. In heaven, there will be no struggle; it's just 24/7 bliss. Yet this state isn't something the average human could tolerate for eternity; we thrive on struggle, hardship and overcoming it, and when you take away those things, you make existence pointless. We're goal-oriented creatures (I don't mean that in a business sense necessarily); we set our eyes on something and run after it until we either catch it or give up. But in heaven there will be none of this.

Ergo, humans could never be happy playing harps among the clouds.
