Every attempt at multi-tasking has resulted in an error message and a ruined CD blank

Probably buffer underrun; that's when your machine can't keep a steady stream of data flowing through the cable to your burner. No matter how fast your machine, it'll happen when you try to multi-task while burning; CD burning is a very complex series of operations that eat up system resources.

Buffer underrun can also happen when you have fucked up and/or poorly-mastered audio. If your audio has too many clipped peaks (places where the dB level rises above 0), errors will get written to the CD; and too many errors results in...you guessed it. If your audio hasn't been dithered (dithering being the process of removing the quantization noise) or has a lot of sub-bass frequencies, buffer underrun is also more likely. When I master, I roll off all frequencies below 40Hz; most equipment can't reproduce sounds that low, the sounds eat up air-space and make the audio sound murky, and they're not good for much anyway (unless you want to rattle your neighbor's windows).
