In reply to: BlueJay 's message, "This has already probably been discussed, but if Harm ended up resigning his commission to be with Mac, would that have an impact on his petition for Mattie? What do you think?" on 20:19:18 05/14/05 Sat

I doubt it. As long as Harm had the resources to look after her, and the high probability of income, not to mention Mac's income, he'd be a desirable parent. I'm speaking as a lay person only. (NT) -- Cece, 15:25:56 05/06/05 Fri

If Harm left, he WOULD have an income immediately. He's got about a month until he can retire. Resignation/retirement doesn't happen in an instant for officers--you have to serve out a period of time anywhere from 90-180 days, unless there is a stop loss for your specialty, then it can be longer. Happens for pilots very frequently. (NT) -- CM>^.,.^< which ever one resigns/retires would be stuck for a while--wouldn't go to the new job though, 18:00:19 05/06/05 Fri

Hmmm, what does this mean? CM... I meant I understood every English word here, but am confused when all words are combined!! :) Thanks for the military intels!! Very interesting :)!! (NT) -- Acer, 19:04:36 05/06/05 Fri

Harm graduated '85 (based on his birth year) so he'll have 20 years in late May/early June. Military gets a pension if they retire at 20yrs or beyond, no matter how old they are at the time. He would get half his base pay--about 35% of total pay--per month for the rest of his life. When you resign/retire you have to put in an "application" to do either, like giving notice. It's anywhere (varies based on lots of different things) from three to six months, you don't just get to say "I quit" and take terminal leave like Harm did to go to Paraguay. If you are in what they call a critical specialty (varies, it depends on what they are short of) they can say, "Nope, no can do," and you have to stay longer. It's a something that is happening quite a lot now. Pilots are part of the group (because they take so long to train) that are often subjected to this. So, just because one of them wants out, it doesn't mean it will happen in the timeframe they want. Normally, though, even if you are stoplossed, you won't have to take the PSC unless it's for a year or less(or a combat assignment)--both those assignments would have been 3-4 years.-- CM>^.,.^<, 20:04:19 05/06/05 Fri

Thank you for the explanation :):)!! Interesting :)!! (NT) -- Acer, 21:39:22 05/06/05 Fri

Not if he marries mac... one of them will have a darn good income and it's not like he's unemployable...LOL. (NT) -- Chris K - if anything - having a mom and a dad will look better, 15:30:38 05/06/05 Fri

What about his promotion? Would he still get it if he didn't take the job in London? (NT) -- harmsgirl, 15:56:12 05/06/05 Fri

probably not... I think he'd have to resign... actually I think one would have to resign to not be separated from each other. (NT) -- Chris K, 16:04:51 05/06/05 Fri

I thought I heard the general say the the billet was for a captain, so Harm was promoted to that rank in order to give him the job. Like what they did with Cresswell. (NT) -- NanaSue, 16:56:29 05/06/05 Fri

You don't get promoted to anything but flag rank to "go with" a job. The promotion board met first, he was promoted but his date of rank hadn't come up yet, so they let him 'wear' it, but he wouldn't get paid for it til his DOR. NORMALLY, you'd just sit in the job at your old rank until the DOR, or the assignment would be effective after. It's not unusual in the miltary for jobs to be either over or underslotted by one rank for a period of time, ie, an 04 in an 05 slot, or an 05 in an 06. Usually happens when personnel issues are tight, you just can't make every slot fit exactly. (NT) -- CM>^.,.^<, 17:55:23 05/06/05 Fri

Ooooooo, I love all this SEX-y talk ... "when personnel issues are tight" ... and, well, "... make every slot fit exactly" ... (NT) -- Ydnil waving hi to fuz and all you other like-minded HBers, 18:29:11 05/06/05 Fri

LOL, only a denizen of the HB could make military bupers issues sound sordid, lol! (NT) -- CM>^.,.^<, 20:05:50 05/06/05 Fri

It's a gift!! (NT) -- manette waving to Lindy and CM!, 20:08:39 05/06/05 Fri

LOL - now wouldn't everyone be happier if more military had that 'gift'--- LOL (NT) -- Chris K, 21:13:17 05/06/05 Fri
